Sunshine

Sunshine came to us in June, 2011 as a seven year old pregnant Paint mare who was part of the Jacksonville seizure. Sunshine was just one of six mares and three stallions in that herd. All but one of the mares were pregnant, and we couldn't get our hands on most of them without some effort because of their past lack of handling and neglect. They were starving, and so it's a miracle that all of the babies were later born healthy.

Sunshine foaled on March 20, 2012, giving us her precious baby "Rain." Sunshine was a wonderful mother, and having a foal seemed to quiet her down. This once stand-offish and distrustful mare became very sweet with people once she had her baby. After Rain was weaned and Sunshine had a chance to recover, we began her training program. Don Knapp did an excellent job working with this mare and brought her along to be a really nice, quite trail horse.

In August of 2014, Sunshine was adopted but came back to us 7 years later when her adopter lost her job due to the COVID crisis. We got Sunshine tuned up and began riding her again. However, in 2022 Sunshine sustained a stifle injury that makes her unsafe to ride. She is 100% pasture sound, and so she is living out her life as a happy companion horse.

Sunshine who is now 21 years old is very easy to care for. She stands for the farrier and vet without issue. She loads, ties and bathes. She does have thin soles and has a tendency towards laminitis, and so we must manage her diet carefully. If you are looking for a super sweet horse who loves attention and gets along with all other horses, Sunshine is the mare for you!
